PROGRESS IN PARADISE: Coral Reef restoration efforts, rebuilding fisheries habitat.

Southern Florida and the Florida Keys are considered by many anglers to be the fishing capital of the world as well as being home to the only living coral reef system in the continental US. Coral reefs provide an amazing and unique habitat that supports an abundance of sport fish species as well as providing much of the foundation for our entire marine ecosystem. Healthy coral reefs are incredibly beneficial to the angling community by providing the environment in which many of our favorite species can live and thrive. Many Pelagic species feed near reef systems, most snapper and grouper are reef dwellers, and coral reefs protect the back country flats and estuaries that so many great sport fish such as tarpon, permit, and bonefish depend on for their feeding, breeding, and overall existence. CLICK PHOTO to enlarge.

Conservation and scientific organizations, such as The Nature Conservancy, Mote Marine Laboratory, and their partners, are making important strides in discovering the reasons why coral health and abundance has been on the decline for several decades. Research has uncovered a combination of elevated sea temperatures, water pollution, disease, and the early 1980's die off of spiny sea urchins, nature's algae eating reef cleaners, that comprise the majority of factors negatively impacting coral and coral reef health.

Recently, through grant funding and along with revenue generated by the "Protect Our Reefs" license plate in the State of Florida, these organizations have begun the long and difficult process of rebuilding our coral reefs and thus restoring habitat that is critically important to fisheries and fishing. Coral Reef restoration is not just another hopeful species specific conservation story, there's a tangible and direct impact on all anglers by supporting the future of recreational and commercial fishing. Without a healthy coral reef system, many of the fisheries and fish species that we enjoy for recreation, sport, and food, could disappear. CLICK PHOTO to enlarge.

Important progress has been made to ensure the future of our reefs and fisheries. Staghorn coral, as an example and once one of the most abundant species in Florida and the Caribbean, had declined by nearly 98% and was thought to be on its way to disappearing altogether in this part of the world. Staghorn coral is important to anglers and fisheries as it provides massive amounts of habitat and cover for juvenile and larval fish, a primary component to the future health of our fisheries. The relationship is rather simple - the more baby fish that can survive and the more habitat they have to survive in, the greater the amount of larger fish will both eat them and then be eaten ... and the food chain continues to thrive. Further declines in coral health and populations can impact wild fish stocks and any time there are pressures on wild fish populations, it may lead to bans, closures, and limits, clearly something that no angler wants to see.

The Staghorn cuttings (left photo) seen here in wild nursery off Summerland Key, Fl, are just a few weeks old. (Photo credit Erich Bartels/Mote.) In a similar nursery (right photo), this is what Staghorn coral can look like at roughly 2 years of growth. (Dave Gilliam/ NOVA SE Univ.) CLICK PHOTOS to enlarge.

Habitat restoration is a critically important step towards creating healthier oceans and fisheries. This collective partnership between scientific organizations, conservation organizations and government agencies, along with the financial support of the angling and corporate community, can make a positive difference in enhancing future of fishing through coral reef restoration.
