MOSQUITO LAGOON REPORT prepared on February 24, 2011 by Captain Chris Myers

Significant changes have taken place over the last few weeks but the one thing that has remained consistent is the excellent fishing on the flats. Just ten days ago, we were still experiencing frost in the morning and water temperatures in the low 50's. This week, the water was reaching 70 with air temperatures hitting 80. The white pelicans are flying off signaling an end to winter and the baitfish are getting more plentiful by the day. Huge schools of redfish can be found roaming the flats with some having over 500 fish in them. There have been few, if any, days in recent weeks when we have not seen nearly one thousand redfish per day.

Hopefully, we have seen the last of the cold weather for this year. The fishing for redfish will remain excellent and the trout bite should get better each week. This is still an excellent time for fly fishing as the redfish are still eating small crabs and shrimp. Spin fishing anglers should stick with the smaller three inch baits for the most consistent bite.

March is here and the Kissimmee chain is producing some nice fish for 2011. The bass are spawning just like they should . As the water temps warm, the bass are spawning out in deeper water up to 5 feet . look for good sandy spawning areas. Put the trolling motor down, and start hunting for beds. the key is to go right back to where you were catching bass in early February and just move out until you see the beds. Polarized glasses are a must . and if you are lucky enough to have a power pole on your boat it just makes it that much better to stake out and stalk the bedding bass. Open water hydrilla patches are holding good numbers of bass that have already spawned . Bait of choice is live wild shiners for big bass. Artificial baits of choice will be rattle traps chrome and black back, plastic baits in Okeechobee candy color has been hot!

Panfish and crappie are still inside finishing up there spawn in shallow , making there way out to open water. fish the pads and reeds with minnows, in 3 feet of water. At the end of march start looking for shell cracker beds in 2 feet of water. Sandy areas are best. The blue gill will also start spawning on the full moons when the water temps are warming. Another good place to look will be the canals where there is running water. Walk along the banks and look down to find beds on the edges. keep an eye open some times the bedding fish might be there just for a few days and then disappear.

MOSQUITO LAGOON FLATS FISHING REPORT prepared on January 27, 2011 by Captain Drew Cavanaugh

Several weeks of great fishing has been and will continue to be among us. Extremely beautiful days in central Florida for sure. The weather here in Florida is by far the best it has been in some time. Sunny days, warm waters, optimal air temperatures and very hungry fish are leading to days of non-stop action. Redfish, trout and black drum have been the staple of the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River and the back country waters of the New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater areas. Fish in the 5 to 15 pound range are of the average size.

As the sun breaks the horizon red fish have been just out of control on the flats. They are doing headstands in feeding frenzies as they are chowing down on shrimp and crabs in the shallow grass flats. A very large shrimp run, along with the full moon we had, has just occurred here in the Oak Hill area which is contributing to the diet of them. Several baits will work however while fishing. Among them are a well-placed soft presentation of a live shrimp on a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook with a 15lb. fluorocarbon leader at 18 inches or so long, a D.O.A. 3" Nite-Glow shrimp or a small live blue crab around the size of a fifty cent piece. As always a key to flats fishing here in Florida and especially on the Mosquito Lagoon is stealth and patience. Just take your time and do not rush things. Be sure as you make casts, work towards your targets or just exploring areas to limit the sounds, movements and commotion on board your boat. It will improve your catch rate. Try, if you are able, to pole your boat always into position. Remember sun at your back and in their face. Fish can hear the sound of a trolling motor from large distances so try to use it to make up time before you get into poling range. Also be sure to give anglers around you a very wide berth. Again 500-800 feet is a good starting point and not that much on the water.

Trout and black drum are also being caught in good numbers all over the Mosquito Lagoon and the flats of the Indian River. Large gator trout are all over the back country secluded grass flats seeking mullet out and other food sources. Be wary of them because they are aware of you. Always take that extra step when targeting big trout. Soft plastics across sand holes will entice an awaiting trout at ambush points. Black drum can be seen and caught on the flats using either a very small blue crab or a live shrimp on a 2/0 circle hook. Again please be sure to handle all of your fish very cautiously for a higher survival rate upon release. Be safe out there with the low waters too. Have fun and great days of fishing to you.

Forecast for 3-5' ssea's and winds at 10-15 had us question if we would go, but winds dropped and the day was great. A 20lb Mahi and 35lb King Mackeral were the top Icebox fillers for the day. A 4' Cuda and LOTS of sharks were caught. My 2 guest both brought their sons, age 7 and 11, so sharks were a hit for them. Winds started to pick up as our day ended, and waves began to break over the shoals as we made our way to Port. The sea's are off limits for several days, with winds forecast to 30kts, and sea's to 8'! We have a charter schedules for the next days that the sea's allow........hopefully that will be soon!
